AND ASIAN BODYWORK

Emotional and psychological issues are often primary factors in the health concerns of Westerners. These factors influence not only how we experience illness, but also our capacity for getting well. Knowing how to work effectively with the psyche is an important specialty within the practice of Oriental Medicine.

Exploring the immediate physical, mental, and emotional experience of the patient often reveals the hidden factors underlying an illness. The key is to help the patient turn the mind toward their present experience. When the underlying process become conscious, the necessary steps toward healing become clear.

There are precise, learnable methods to help one do this. These methods can be easily integrated into our Oriental Medicine practices. They empower our patients, and make us more effective practitioners.

These bodymind skills are inspired by the Hakomi Method for body-centered psychology. Kamala is a teacher for the Hakomi Institute and has been developing and teaching a blend of mind and body skills for Oriental medicine disciplines for twenty years. Most recently she has co-created a series of courses with Lorena Monda, DOM, called Integrative Psychology for Oriental Medicine.

The classes in this program center around four themes:

  1. Building rapport and teaching our patients to mindfully explore their direct experience during a session.
  2. Exploring the language and wisdom of the body to clarify our assessment and treatment.
  3. Working with the connection between mind and emotions.
  4. Transforming resistance and stagnation.

In each class you learn skills that you can immediately apply in your practice.

Below are Kamala's current course offerings in Oregon. These classes will focus on the language of the body as key to discovering and transforming patterns of resistance and stagnation.

Please refer to the Articles section for case studies using acupuncture and bodymind focusing.
