FALL ADVENTURE

We’ve been blessed with some great fall weather so far, and I have been enjoying the brilliant leaf colors. I took a long forest walk on the morning that the rain was supposed to start.  In a typical fall way, I was thinking I wanted to get a last good one in before all the leaves were rained away.  There were some clouds, but it looked like I had enough time.  I started to walk up the hill, and kept taking in the fresh air.

I have a favorite spot that is up on the ridge and I was heading for it.  At one point I looked up and the cloud color and smell in the air told me it was about to rain. I was going to turn back, but I was so close to my spot!  I kept going, but sure enough, down it came.  Even though I was drenched by the time I got back to the house, it was a great little adventure.

Little adventures are a great pick-me-up if you get caught by the fall blues.  They also help anxiety that seems to blossom in the fall.  So find ways to use color, song, nature and friends to help you stay connected with yourself and the joy of the season.

If it helps you to have a winter get-away planned, see the next article about the retreat I am hosting in Hawaii with my friend and colleague, Nina Cherry.

TIPS FOR SELF CARE

Avoid the Flu

Below are six precautionary measures you can take to help you avoid getting the flu this season.  The virus enters through your nose and throat.  So these tips have to do with stopping the virus from proliferating in your system, even if you come in contact with it.

1. Wash your hands frequently.

2. "Hands-off-the-face".  Resist the temptation to touch any part of your face.

3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water. (Listerine if you don't trust salt).

The H1N1 flu virus takes 2-3 days after initial exposure and infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that herbs or the prescription drug Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Clean your nostrils at least once a day with warm salt water.  Blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.

5. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C.  If you supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. Drink warm liquids.

Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

If you have a lot of exposure to people or kids who are sick, there are antiviral herbal formulas that you can take preventively.  The well known formula Yin Qiao San/Lonicera formula is one of them.  We have this formula at the office. You can also get it at Sundance and Capella. If you start to feel flu symptoms, call the office and we will give you herbs to help control the symptoms and length of the illness.  You should start herbs, or the prescription drug. Tamiflu, within the first 48 hours for best results.

FOOD SENSITIVITY TESTING

At Moon and Lotus Clinic

Dr. Carole Warner will be here to test people for food sensitivities on October 30th

We will not be testing in November, so if you are thinking about having this test, call the office for an appointment: (541)345-2220

Avoiding your food sensitivities helps reduce mucous in your system.  This is another form of preventive health care, especially during the cold and flu season.

October 29th - “Gut Feelings”

Lily Room ($18 in advanced/$22 at the door)

From heartburn to hemorrhoids and everything in between, having our intestines work smoothly and well is at the heart of good health and well-being.  Most people use drugs to deal with their uncomfortable symptoms even though healthy bowels are surprisingly easy to achieve naturally.  Learn specific things you can do to actually resolve problems you have with your digestion and elimination even if you’ve suffered with them all of you life!

November 13th - Cooking Healthy for the Holidays

($25 in advanced/$29 at the door, includes the food!)

Back by popular demand!  Come feast with us on delicious healthy foods for the holidays.  Most of us know we have foods that we react to in less than favorable ways, but often they are among our favorites, especially when it comes to the holidays.  You’ll learn how to take your favorite holiday recipes and substitute ingredients that don’t agree with you for ones that do.

This will allow you to enjoy the holidays this year without making yourself or your family sick in the process.  Best of all, no one else needs to know you’ve changed a thing because everything will still taste delicious!  While listening and learning, you’ll be enjoying a plate of holiday favorites and will be taking home the recipes of everything on the menu.

BE SURE TO BRING SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY RECIPES so we can coach you on specific modifications right then and there. (Note: Dishes and recipes will include different ones from last year!)

For those of you who have been tested for food sensitivities, we will also be available to answer your questions and give other support and coaching to help you increase your culinary enjoyment and success while on the elimination diet and thereafter.
